• Food preservation: Alum is used for canning and pickling to help preserve the crispness of fruits and vegetables. It can also be used to tenderize meat and improve the texture and flavor of pickled vegetables. 
• Baking: Alum reacts with baking soda or baking powder to create carbon dioxide, which helps dough rise.

• Animal feed: Ferrous sulfate is used in animal feeds to stimulate growth.

• Natural dyeing: Ferrous sulfate can be used as a mordant, color shifter, and to increase lightfastness. It can react with dyes that contain tannin to produce colors like dark olive green, deep grayish purple, and rich chocolate brown. 

• Construction Hydrated lime is used to stabilize soils for roads, dams, airfields, and building foundations. It can also be used to improve the strength and durability of fine-grained soils. 

When used as a mordant (binder) in dyeing, it fixes dye to cotton and other fabrics, rendering the dye insoluble. Alums are also used in pickling, in baking powder, in fire extinguishers, and as astringents in medicine.
